Ephedra Sinensis is an evergreen native to Asia, where is has long been part of traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for respiratory ailments. A tea of the stem tips is typically taken as a decoction to open up breathing, especially in cases of asthma and nasal congestion. The plant’s chemical constituent, ephedrine, resembles adrenaline in its action. Ephedrine and ephedra-containing supplements were once a very popular treatment for weight loss as well as an energy booster and weight lifting supplement. But it was also linked to considerable cardiac side effects as well. Ephedra is known to grow on rocky or sandy mountain slopes. It has a distinct character, namely because it lacks any type of true leaf. It appears like a bush that has lost its leaves yet remains green at the stems.

Growing information:

Sow your seeds at a depth of 1/8” in a mix of 50% sand and 50% soil. Maintain a temperature between 65-70 degrees F. Keep moist, but not wet until germination begins. Gradually decrease moisture after germination. Established plants require strong sunlight and dry soil. Outdoor cultivation is suitable in zones 4-7.
