Description:
HUMULUS LUPULUS. Well known flavoring for beer. Important medicinally for its calming effect. A pillow stuffed with hops flowers will overcome insomnia. Tall growing vine, ideal for covering antenna towers. Seeds will yield a mixture of male and female plants. Plants can grow up to 20 feet in one year when grown in a sunny location and are easily trained on a fence or trellis. Each year they die back to the ground in winter. In late summer the vines bear cone-like flowers that have a fresh, pine-like fragrance. The flowers are used in beer-making. Dark green, deeply lobed foliage is very attractive.
Growing Instructions:
Seed - sow 6-8 weeks of cold treatment at 35 degrees. Germination is fairly quick. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and plant out in the summer or following spring.
First, presoak your seeds for one to two days in water. Then put them in moistened peat moss, sand or paper towels and cold stratify in the fridge for six weeks. After six weeks, keep them at room temperature and check daily for sprouts over the next four weeks. Transplant the seedlings into a loose, rich soil. Young seedlings are sensitive to over-watering, so be sure to keep the soil on the dry side. Once established, provide structure for the plant to grow on.
