There are at least twenty-nine uses of betony in the treatment of physical diseases. At one time, wood betony was probably the most popular medicinal herb and was used widely during the middle Ages as a charm to ward off so-called evil or ill humors that supposedly brought disease to the human body.   Uses:  There are at least 29 uses of Purple Betony.  Some of the most popular ones are:   -          Has strong astringent properties -          Efficient in the treatment of diarrhea -          Has an ability to lower blood pressure and sooth anxiety and stress-related ailments. -          Alleviates headaches -          Used to reduce sinus inflammation and sore throats associated with allergies and irritants. -     Makes a good tonic for head injuries and head-related injuries.   Cultivation:  Betony is a cold weathered plant that does better in the ground than in a pot.  In cold areas, sow seed directly outdoors in early spring. In warmer areas, refrigerate for several weeks before sowing into warm soil.  Cold stratification (refrigeration) of the seed is recommended during the germination stage to simulate winter conditions.  The warming effect that follows helps break seed dormancy.  For this process, place seeds in a moist paper towel and refrigerate, checking periodically for germination.  You can also try just soaking in cold water while changing the water periodically.  Once germination is noticed, bury the sprout without touching any roots.  Keep soil moist and relatively cool.  This is not a hot climate plant and would do best in a cooler soil.  It is considered suitable for zones 3-8.
